The One Who Calms the Storm

Rhonda

Blessings,

Book a call

“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” — Mark 4:39 (ESV)

A few weeks ago, I stood on the beach and watched a storm rolling in. Dark clouds gathered in the distance as thunder rumbled and lightning announced what was coming.

Around me, people began scrambling to gather their things and get off the beach. As I watched the storm approach, I was reminded of the incredible power of God. What I could see before me was powerful, but it was so small compared to the power of the One who created it.

I thought about the disciples in the boat with Jesus.

The storm surrounding them was fierce. Waves were breaking into the boat, and these experienced fishermen were afraid. Yet while the storm raged around them, Jesus slept.

They woke Him, frightened and desperate.

Jesus stood and spoke to the storm:

“Peace! Be still!”

And it was still.

The One sleeping in the boat wasn’t unaware of what was happening. He was Lord over what was happening.

I sometimes need to remember that distinction.

There have been storms in my own life when worry and doubt seemed louder than what I knew to be true. During one of those times, God kept bringing the same Scripture before me:

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10 (ESV)

I saw it in things I read. People sent it to me. My best friend even gave me a pillow with those words that still sits in the chair where I pray.

Again and again, I heard the reminder:

Be still.

Stop striving. Stop trying to figure everything out. Remember who God is.

The circumstances didn’t immediately disappear, but something happened in that chair as I prayed. Jesus met me there. And each time worry began to rise again, I was reminded that the God who knew my storm also knew me.

Maybe that’s why the order of Jesus’ words means so much to me.

“Peace! Be still!”

Before I could see the calm, I needed His peace.

The storms of life can feel powerful enough to make us want to run for cover. But the One who knows the storm is more powerful still.

He knows the wind.
He knows the waves.
He knows what is coming.

And He knows you.

Be still and know that He is God.
