Is Your God Too Small?

Rhonda

Blessings,

MONDAY ENCOURAGEMENT

“And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they spoke of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands.”
2 Chronicles 32:19 ESV

The people spoke of the God of Jerusalem as though He were like the gods of the surrounding nations—gods fashioned by human hands. They were reducing the living God, the Creator of all things, to something created by man.

This verse has been on my mind a lot lately.

I keep coming back to one question: Has our view of God become too small?

Of course, nothing can diminish who God is. But sometimes our view of Him can become smaller than the truth of who He is.

This is the God of the universe.

The God who made the heavens and the earth. The One who spoke light into darkness and placed every star in the sky. He created every living creature. He created the oceans and the mountains, the sun and the moon.

He created you.

And He created me.

I love taking pictures of the beautiful things I see around me. The other evening, as I watched the sun going down, I couldn’t help but marvel at the God who created it. The colors, the clouds, the enormous sky stretched out before me—and I thought about how all of it points to Him.

And yet even the beauty we can see is only a glimpse of who He is.

Our finite human minds cannot begin to comprehend the greatness of an infinite God.

Maybe that’s one reason we need to look up more often.

We live in a world where our eyes are constantly looking down—at our phones, our schedules, our problems, and everything demanding our attention. But what might happen if we simply looked up?

“Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing.”
Isaiah 40:26 ESV

Creation reminds us that He is God.

From the vastness of the universe to the tiny cells within our bodies, His handiwork is everywhere. Every breath reminds us of the life He has given us.

One of my favorite songs right now is “Gratitude” by Brandon Lake. There is a simple line that captures what I often feel when I think about the greatness of God:

“So I throw up my hands and praise You again and again.”

Sometimes there really aren’t enough words.

And perhaps that’s the point.

When I remember who God is, I am also reminded of something deeply personal: this God is my God.

The God who created the universe knows me. He loves me. He cares about the great things in my life and the seemingly small ones. Nothing about my life is insignificant to Him.

So when my circumstances begin to feel bigger than my God, I want to look up.

When worry occupies more of my thoughts than His faithfulness, I want to look up.

When I become distracted by everything around me, I want to look up.

Look at the sky.
Look at His creation.
Remember who He is.

He is God.

And He is so much greater than we could ever make Him in our minds.

A thought for today

Maybe today we simply need to look up. Let creation remind us of the greatness of the One who made it—and remember that the God who holds the universe also holds us.

Take a moment today to look up. Let creation remind you of the greatness of the One who made it all. He is not a god made by human hands. He is the living God—the Creator of heaven and earth. The One and Only God! Lift your eyes and remember who He is. HE IS GOD!
