MONDAY ENCOURAGEMENT
Last week I gave you a sunset, but this morning I’m reminded of the sunrise. This was my view on my morning walk.
Isn’t it amazing that God’s mercy and grace are new every morning? His steadfast love never ceases, and His mercies never come to an end.
Something beautiful is in the original Hebrew of these verses. The word translated “steadfast love” in Lamentations 3:22 is chesed (?????). It conveys God’s faithful, steadfast love—a love marked by kindness, mercy, and faithfulness.
Then, in verse 23, we read that His mercies are “new every morning.” The Hebrew word translated “new” is chadashim (?????????), from chadash (??????), meaning “new” or “fresh.”
I love the freshness of something new.
Think about the smell of a new car, new leather, fresh paint, or bread just out of the oven. I bet you could almost smell a few of those as you read them! Certain smells can bring back wonderful memories and remind us of something fresh and new.
But the newness Lamentations describes is even better.
Every morning, God’s mercy is fresh. His faithfulness hasn’t worn out overnight. His love hasn’t faded because of what happened yesterday. We wake up to God’s faithfulness again and again.
Just like the sun coming up.
Some mornings we see a beautiful sunrise spread across the sky. Other mornings, the clouds hide it completely. But the sun is still there.
I think God’s faithfulness can feel that way sometimes.
There are days when we can see His hand so clearly. And there are days when, with our human eyes, we struggle to see what He is doing. But He is still there. He is still faithful. His steadfast love has not changed, and His mercies have not come to an end.
I’m reminded of the hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness, one of my grandmother’s favorites. One line I have always loved reminds us that God provides all we need.
He knows our needs. He provides. And tomorrow morning, when the sun rises again, His mercies will be new again.
What an awesome, loving, amazing, and faithful God.
